The institute has more than 10,000 members.  Individuals and organizations, working in the field of concrete and interested in the advancement of construction technology, in the use of material, equipment, process design, concrete products, construction, teaching or research are the members of the Institute.  It is governed by a council of a President, four Vice Presidents, Nine Members and the Secretary General manages the Head Quarters and coordinates the activities of all the regional centres.  To cater to the regional needs, 30 centres are functioning in major cities/towns across the length and breadth of India and these centres are managed by respective executive committees.

The Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) promotes awareness of research, development and implementation on concrete technology in the construction in industry.   Over the years, ICI has become a common platform for the builders, manufacturers, practicing architects and engineers, teachers and students to share and disseminate latest knowledge of construction technology.

Objectives:

To promote growth of concrete construction and its sub-specializations.

To disseminate information and to arrange to train personnel for the needs of changing concepts in the technology.

To collaborate with national and international agencies in creating better understanding of concrete construction technology.

To indentify R & D problems of practical relevance to concrete construction technology.

To institute and distribute awards for outstanding achievements in concrete construction technology.

About GRIET student chapter

GRIET ICI Student Chapter was inaugurated on 30th Jan, 2013.

ICI student chapter provides suitable platform to interact with practicing professionals in various disciplines, with an objective of reducing the gap between their knowledge and practice.  This enables students  to make a head start. In association with ICI AP-HC, GRIET aims at conducting educational and technical events in and off campus to promote awareness of current trends and practices in the construction industry amongst professionals, teachers and students.

Activities under ICI Student Chapter:

GREEN BUILDINGS WORKSHOP

Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) have conducted one day workshop on IGBC Green rating programme on 3 Oct 2013 and building visit on 9 October 2013.
Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Green Homes is the first rating programme developed in India, exclusively for the residential sector. It is based on accepted energy and environmental principles and strikes a balance between known established practices and emerging concepts. The system is designed to be comprehensive in scope, yet simple in operation.

IGBC Faculty Mr. Sateesh Selvam Certification team, IGBC & Mr. Sampath IGBC Faculty leaded the workshop.

The workshop focussed on benefits of green homes

Discussed about tangible benefits such as energy savings and water savings.

Intangible benefits such as enhanced air quality, day lighting, conservation of scarce natural resources etc.

Brief description about constantly evolving eco friendly technologies.

Discussed case studies featuring on-going sustainable green projects which include the planning stage, the design innovations, construction materials and the challenges during the building process.

Focussed on particular aspects of construction and building technology like roofing, paints including its various applications, the green variations in the same and latest developments.

Covered service aspects of construction sector such as wiring, plumbing and others.

Green buildings often include measures to reduce energy consumption – both the embodied energy required to extract, process, transport and install building materials and operating energy to provide services such as heating and power for equipment.

As high-performance buildings use less operating energy, embodied energy has assumed much greater importance – and may make up as much as 30% of the overall life cycle energy consumption.

People are slowly but steadily realising that the initial investments in sourcing eco-friendly materials or design techniques are more financially viable.

This workshop helped in creating greater awareness on the benefits of green buildings materials, ready availability and also energy savings derived in the long run.

PRECA – Industrial Visit

ICI Student Chapter conducted Industrial visit to one of manufacturing units of PRECA solutions India Pvt. Lmt. Fathepur, near shankarpalli, RR District On 28th September, 2013. About 118 student ICI members of 2nd and 3rd years attended the visit along with 4 faculty members.

The unit manufactures Pre-casted and Pre-stressed concrete members like beams, columns, retaining walls, stair case, slabs, etc. Students learned a lot from this visit regarding reinforcement, batching unit, Pre-casting and Pre-stressing, artificial aggregates. Students are curious to be a part in these kind of educational visits.
